Express Entry Explained

Overview

Express Entry is an online immigration system used by IRCC to manage and select skilled workers for immigration to Canada through its three economic immigration programs:

Canadian Experience Class

  • For skilled workers who have one year of Canadian work experience
  • work experience must have been gained in the 3 years before you apply

Federal Skilled Worker

  • For skilled workers with foreign work experience
  • Must meet criteria for education and other factors

Federal Skilled Trades Program

  • For skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade
  • must have a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification

Here's how the Express Entry system works:

1. Eligibility Assessment:

  • Potential candidates must first determine their eligibility for one of the three federal economic immigration programs

2. Create an Express Entry Profile:

  • Eligible candidates create an online profile in the Express Entry system

3. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score:

  • Each candidate is assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors like age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and additional factors.
  • The CRS score determines the candidate's ranking within the Express Entry pool.

4. Regular Draws:

  • The Canadian government conducts regular draws (around every two weeks) from the Express Entry pool, inviting candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.
  • The specific CRS score cutoff for each draw is determined by the government based on its immigration goals and the number of available spots.

5. Invitation to Apply (ITA):

  • Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence.

6. Application for Permanent Residence:

  • Candidates who receive an ITA submit a detailed application for permanent residence. This includes providing supporting documents and paying the required fees.

7. Processing and Approval:

  • IRCC reviews the application, and if everything is in order, they issue a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR)

Processing times for express entry are typically faster than non-express entry permanent residence applications. It is important for candidates to regularly update their profiles to ensure accurate information and to improve their chances of receiving an ITA and ensuring that CRS scores are up-to-date .
